A chip-enabled credit card is a card that is embedded with a microchip. It stores and protect cardholder data, enhancing security and protection from fraud. The chip works along with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to help identify the respective cardholder.

Contact our 24-hour Customer Contact Centre at 1-888-424-2422 to activate your card. Please make sure you have both your new credit card and PIN handy before you call. Press 3 for credit cards and follow the instructions.


A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a 4-digit code that works with the unique microchip within your card. Instead of your signature, your PIN is used to authorize your transactions at chip and PIN terminals. Chip and PIN technology reduces the possibility of unauthorized card use. For added protection, always cover the POS terminal or ATM key pad with your hand as you enter your PIN.

You should receive your PIN a few days before receiving your credit card. If you did not receive your PIN or have misplaced it, please call us at 1-888-424-242.

If you would like to change your PIN, please have your credit card handy and call us at 1-888-424-2422. Press 3 for credit cards and follow the instructions to change your PIN.

Please note: You will need to use your old PIN to approve the first transaction you make following a PIN change. Your new PIN will be activated after this transaction is complete.

There are a few number sequences that cannot be used for your PIN:

  • The same digit repeated four times (e.g. 1111)
  • Four consecutive digits (e.g. 1234)
  • Your PIN cannot start with 0 (zero) as it may be declined in some countries

Using a Chip and PIN Credit Card

Step 1: Enter your credit card into the chip-enabled terminal
Step 2: Follow the instructions including entering your PIN (remember to protect your PIN)
Step 3: Keep your card in the terminal until you are prompted to remove it
Step 4: Remove your card and take your receipt

No, you need not use your PIN for certain transactions:

  • If a store doesn't have a chip-enabled terminal, the merchant will process your transactions by swiping the magnetic stripe on the back of your card and you will have to sign for your purchase
  • If you are travelling to a country where chip and PIN technology isn’t widespread or is currently unavailable
  • You should never be asked for your PIN when shopping online or over the phone.
